Future Collective travelled to India in January 2025 to reconnect with our friends in the remote tribal village of Pal on an international community building adventure, celebrating a 50 year Friendship-Relationship.

I now have a greater understanding of the legacy of the Gandhian non-violent, non-cooperation, self-sufficiency and self-rule approach to politics and community development, and how those values have been thwarted and continue to be challenged by various national, international and global projects.
The relationship is 50 years old in 2025. Noel shared photos of tribal groups from his early visits, where some cultural traditions are now unknown to local people. The sharing and connection is deep and ongoing.
The trip experiences reenforced my view that it is essential to 'tread lightly', 'listen carefully' and 'speak softly' when visiting another country, especially one with such deep histories and varied cultures as India, double especially when we come with an assumption, however well-intentioned and 'self-aware', that we have something to offer.
Reinforced that these are shared challenges... sometimes real improvements can be achieved through politics and international cooperation, but there is still a valuable role for local-to-local, person-to-person collaboration.
Terrific insights into the socio-economic and standard living of the selected communities, the role of women, interaction with politics and the role of community organisations providing education and farmer support services.
Understanding the needs and wants of the community paved the way for meaningful steps to be taken in assisting the community to face these challenges.
